Alternatives Coaching for College Students

“Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.”
–Jim Rohn

The combination of your formal education laced with your ability to learn to think alternatively, a process of self-education, is the new yardstick for success in a 21st Century environment.

Let me flood you with reasons why this premise is not only important, but timely as well. From the mouths of recent authors and educators alike:

  • Daniel Goleman, author of the book Working with Emotional Intelligence states the following: “Emotional intelligence abilities (soft-skills) are about four times more important than IQ in determining professional success and prestige.”
  • Ken Robinson, education thought leader and author of The Element and Out of Our Minds shares this personal insight. “My premise is that we are all born with immense natural talents but that too few people discover what they are and even fewer of them develop them properly. Ironically, one of the main reasons for this massive waste of talent is the very process that is meant to develop it; education.”
  • Daniel H. Pink, author of A Whole New Mind gives us this insight. “We are moving from an economy and a society built on logical, linear, computer-like capabilities of the Information Age to an economy and society built on the inventive, empathic, big-picture capabilities of what’s rising in its place, The Conceptual Age.”
  • Richard Florida, the author of Rise of the Creative Class gives us this unique factoid. “The Creative Class is dominant in terms of wealth and income, with its members earning nearly twice as much on average as members of the other two classes.”
  • Eric Liu, in the book Imagination First states the following: “When all we do is focus on the content and not the skills to manipulate content, we are not producing scientists or artists or investigators for the twenty-first century.”
  • Dave Meier, author of The Accelerated Learning Handbook makes this observation. “The survival and health of individuals today depends on their ability to learn. And to learn not prescribed, repetitive behaviors, but how to think, question, explore, create, and consistently grow.”
  • Duncan Mathison, who wrote Unlock the Hidden Job Market had this to say. “50% of positions are filled without a formal process.” This is an insight you may want to ponder. How could a self-enhanced persona not be part of this?
  • Peter Diamandis, author of the book Abundance, has this to say. “Most of today’s educational systems are built upon the same learning hierarchy: math and science at the top, humanities in the middle, art on the bottom. The reason for this is because these systems were developed in the nineteenth century, in the midst of the industrial revolution, which this hierarchy provided the best foundation for success. This is no longer the case. In a rapidly changing technological culture and ever-growing information based economy, creative ideas are the ultimate resource.”
  • Malcolm Gladwell, author of the book Blink had this to say. “Sometimes we can know more about someone or something in the blink of an eye than we can after months of study.” As I stated, education laced with self-education beyond academic endeavors is the new yardstick.

Drawing your attention to statements such as these will have everything to do with the success of your college experience.

Based on these insights, here’s the program I developed.

College Concept Alternatives

Bridging Identity and Academia

CCA is a course specifically designed to develop the more intrinsic side of your college experience with the focus centered on strengthening your interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence.

Interpersonal intelligence centers on a persons capacity to perceive the intentions, motivations, and desires of other people in an effort to work more effectively with them.

Intrapersonal intelligence involves the capacity to understand oneself and use that information effectively in terms of regulating one’s own life.

Along with addressing these two aspects of your makeup, we’ll also look into:

  • Learning to utilize the power of multiple perspectives – a goldmine in a University setting.
  • Enhancing your creative potential with a program I developed called OPINE.
  • Learning the “Art” of goal setting – a counterintuitive exploration.
  • An introduction to the principles and applications of accelerated learning techniques.
  • A closer look into emotional intelligence – the power of soft skills.

As the quotes I offered earlier clearly pointed out, success in the new millennium calls for the development and engagement of the more persona driven side of your skills (character development) in conjunction with your academic prowess.

The Details…

The course includes four one-half hour sessions per month on Skype or phone. I will provide a work structure each week to keep accountability and forward momentum in active mode.

I forgo any minimum monthly requirement. I believe that if I’m doing my job, and you’re seeing results, our time together will simply run its natural course, whatever that may be.

Acknowledging the exorbitant fees at present in today’s universities, I offer this program for students at a specially reduced rate from my regular fees.
